Netflix Ending Support for Nearly 90 Million Customers

An estimated 87 million customers or more have until March 2 to enjoy Netflix on their devices, according to reports.

Starting on March 2, the streamer is ending support for the long-running app on the PlayStation 3, which was first launched in 2006. In addition, various smart TVs that are over 10 years old will be losing support for Netflix, as well as some older set-top boxes.

While neither Netflix nor Sony have shared the news, users on Reddit have posted images of a warning on their screen about the pending expiration.

"Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026. Visit netflix.com/compatibledevices to see a list of supported devices. (R40)," the message states. Similarly, users on X (formerly Twitter) reported receiving the same message.

The BT TV Box (Z4) and BT TV Recordable Box (G4) will also no longer be supported by the streamer, according to Tom's Guide. These older smart TVs will be around ten years or older by March 2026.

Back in 2009, a deal was struck between Netflix and Sony that allowed PS3 users to stream movies and TV on their console. Back then, you had to request a Blu-ray disc to access the digital service, due to an exclusivity deal the company had with Microsoft for the Xbox 360. That deal expired in 2010, however, when Netflix became available as an app on the device. In the 17 years since the PS3 deal, Netflix has become a much larger app, with greater tech requirements needed for customers to successfully stream on their device.

PS3 was the last seventh-generation console to still officially support Netflix. The PS4 and PS5 are not affected by the new rule. For those affected, the majority of smart TVs will support Netflix streaming on their own. Alternatively, smart TV sticks can also be purchased cheaply, with better streaming capabilities than the 20-year-old PS3.
