Team USA Speed Skater Conor McDermott-Mostowy on Embracing Failure

Success. What does that word mean when you’re an elite 21-year-old athlete and neuroscience major? Long-track Team USA speed skater Conor McDermott-Mostowy has a few thoughts about personal goals, becoming a well-balanced man, and what it means to represent the United States in the 2022 Olympics . He also has his own definition of success —and it’s not what you’d think. For those of us who remember Eric and Beth Heiden, they truly introduced the U.S. to the sport. The Wisconsin-born siblings excelled in speed skating, cross-country skiing, tennis, soccer, and cycling back in the day when athletes didn’t specialize in one sport from a young age. Beth was a speed skating bronze medalist at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics and Eric won five speed skating gold medals. Their Upper Midwest, All-American smiles were on Wheaties boxes, the cover of TIME, and in our living rooms. Short-track speed skating only made its Olympic debut at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games. The Best New Hotels in America: Iconic Buildings, Outdoor Escapes, and More

From boutique properties to luxury resorts , there’s no shortage of accommodations for travelers opening in 2022 across the United States. And after two years of limited travel, we’re thrilled to be checking out (or perhaps more appropriately, checking into) these new hotels in the coming months.     It’s impossible to categorize all of the new and recently opened hotels across the country, so we focused on some of the buzziest openings, and a few clear trends emerged. In the coming year, a greater number of properties will lean into making the hotel itself a destination, others will focus on giving a second life to much-loved historical buildings, and more still will put an emphasis on the outdoors. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, these new and upcoming hotel openings stand out from the crowd—and have us excited to hit the road this year. How Capelli Sport Built a Fitness Line for Everyone

This article was produced in partnership with Capelli Sport If you’re a footie fan, odds are you’ve seen the name  Capelli Sport emblazoned on soccer jerseys. The brand opened its doors in 2011 as a soccer equipment and apparel provider, serving teams and players around the world. The company’s growth story was seismic. After a few years supplying predominantly youth and amateur teams stateside, it landed an exclusive deal with Greek club champion AEK Athens in 2018, stealing the iconic club away from its former provider, Nike. It’s struck up a handful of other professional and national team deals while continuing to sell its wares to an American consumer base, too. Sometime in those early years, the company started talking about what they saw as a natural expansion of their business. If they could make a soccer business work on multiple continents, they could branch into fitness and lifestyle gear as well. So they did, periodically rolling out new products to its fitness line ...

2022 Outdoor Retailer 'Snow Show' Highlights

To start any conversation with an assumption the global pandemic is somehow waning seems naïve at best. While case numbers plunge in the U.S., we’ve all become too smart to make any big predictions. It’s a caveat we’re keeping in mind as we talk about the state of outdoor recreation while moving wearily through the next months or years of this interim period. But it’s worth examining where the radically changed world of outdoor recreation is and where it could be headed. In that regard, last week’s Outdoor Retailer trade show in Denver served as a great jumping-off point. “O.R.,” as it’s referred to in the industry, has been around in various incarnations now for 40 years. The winter gathering of brands, buyers, athletes, and innovators displays all the snow sport/outdoor gear and styles for the following winter. From its inception, this trade show has always been a great way to take the temperature of the activities we love. Fewer Crowds, Promising Signs It’s important not to c...

The Definitive Guide on How to Build Big Arms

If you lift, then you probably want to look like you lift. And for many gym-goers, looking the part includes owning a pair of arms that put the seams of your sleeves to the test. Aesthetically, big arms are imposing and signal to others that you do indeed hoist iron. Functionally, bigger and stronger arms help you bench press , overhead press , and row more weight; they’re not just the end; they’re a means to another end ( lots of strength ). Paul Aiken/Shutterstock And while most folks think hammering out close-grip bench presses and standing curls is enough to target the smaller arm muscles, there’s a science to building up your arms. But there are four fundamentals you need to wrap your head around to comprehend how to build bigger arms fully. Arm Training Tenants Muscle Mechanics : That is, how your muscle move your joints. To fully develop your biceps and triceps, you must know how they move so you can select the right exercises for the job. Training Volume : Volume — me...

This Kettlebell Grip Cue May Change Your Training for the Better

#kettlbell has accumulated north of three million posts on Instagram. Your favorite fitspo is probably (most definitely) swinging and hoisting kettlebells overhead, and you’ve been officially convinced to swing and hoist kettlebells . If that sounds like you, you probably have run into an annoying and unexpected problem: Your grip sucks .  Kettlebells aren’t the easiest tool to grab, and the ballistic nature of many kettlebell movements makes them even harder to hang onto. What’s more, your ability to grip, and grip tightly, actually facilitate stronger and more powerful lifts . And it all starts with your muscle fascia. The Importance of Grip The fascial lines of the body are many and varied. This article isn’t intended to be a primer on fascia but on better understanding it to enhance our training. The arm lines are particularly relevant to our grip needs. There are four of these lines, and all play some part in grip and its effect on supercharging our performance. This ex...
