When the Cleveland Browns drafted Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, many wondered if owner Jimmy Haslam had forced the pick.
After all, it was odd that the Browns took Sanders, who came off the board two rounds after Cleveland drafted another quarterback, Dillon Gabriel.
However, Haslam shot down the notion that he was the one who decided to draft Sanders, saying that it was general manager Andrew Berry's call instead.
“If you had told me Friday night driving home y’all are gonna pick Shedeur, I would say that’s not happening,” he said, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “We had a conversation early (Saturday) morning and then we had a conversation later that day. I think we had the right people involved in the conversation.
“At the end of the day, that’s Andrew Berry’s call. Andrew made the call to pick Shedeur. Just like who’s gonna start or what play we’re gonna call, that’s Kevin (Stefanski’s) call. But that’s Andrew’s call. He made the call,” Haslam concluded.

The Browns' selection of Sanders ended what was one of the most legendary slides in NFL Draft history, as the Colorado product was expected to be a first-round pick by many.
It was fair to wonder if Haslam played at least some role in the selection of Sanders, as Haslam has been known to meddle over the years and a video of head coach Kevin Stefanski and Berry looking unhappy after the selection only added fuel to that fire.
“Yeah, I think we’re probably just tired from the weekend,” Berry told reporters after the video went viral.
“Those clips, it’s not timed up to exactly the right time so I wouldn’t — don’t read too much into that,” Stefanski added.
Sanders is currently vying for at least a roster spot in his first season in the NFL and while the starting quarterback job is up for grabs, veterans Kenny Pickett or Joe Flacco are expected to win it over Sanders and Gabriel.
While he is a recent draft pick, there is no guarantee that Sanders will stick, seeing as how he's a fifth-round pick.
But experts believe the Browns will end up parting with whoever doesn't win the starting job between Flacco and Pickett, which would leave Gabriel and Sanders as the backups.
