The new Mission: Impossible movie is coming very soon, and, of course, everyone is talking about the incredible stamina of Tom Cruise, who is taking his final bow as Ethan Hunt in the incredible action franchise. But, while on the press tour for Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, actress Hannah Waddingham decided to give some attention to one of the movie's stars who isn't Tom Cruise. Speaking to the BBC One Show, Waddingham heaped praise on her co-star, Simon Pegg.
"Can I just say something about this man because he will never say it himself, he is so much the heart of this film, every time he does anything, the audience are going nuts," Waddingham said. "Honestly, I think he's one of the most underrated actors we have...There's the action of it all. There' the Tom [Cruise] of it all. But this man so much heart and comedy at the same time and I think he's so underrated as a dramatic actor."
Pegg joined the Mission: Impossible franchise back in 2006, playing computer wiz Benji Dunn. This was three years before he became Scotty in the 2009 J.J. Abrams version of Star Trek. At the time, nobody could have predicted that Pegg would still be making Mission: Impossible movies almost twenty years later.
Ted Lasso star Waddingham probably knows a thing or two about being pigeonholed for comedy. Though she's world famous for Ted Lasso, her dramatic work in Game of Thrones, 12 Monkeys and Krypton is all fantastic. Pegg, of course, began his career in comedy. Perhaps his best work in that genre was in the 1999-2001 UK sitcom Spaced, which he co-created with Jessica Stevens and represented his first collaboration with Edgar Wright.
Of course, Spaced, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are the comedic gems that Pegg is known for. But, Waddingham is onto something here. Pegg is great in the Impossible films, precisely because he does bring a warm, human element to the films. We're all pumped to see Tom Cruise dangle outside of a plane, but without Simon Pegg as Benji, we might not care as much.
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning hits theaters on Friday, May 23.
