Everyone's favorite Tool Time host, Tim Allen, has been tight-lipped about his much-anticipated return as Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5, but the actor is finally shedding some light on the upcoming flick. The new comedy, produced by Pixar Animation Studios, will mark the fifth installment in Pixar's popular Toy Story series and the sequel to 2019's Toy Story 4.
During an April 16 recent interview with WIVB, Allen revealed a key part of the plot of the new film, and it marks something new for the longstanding Pixar series. Toy Story 5, written and directed by Andrew Stanton, will feature Allen, as well as the return of Tom Hanks in his role of Woody.
"I can tell you that it's a lot about Jessie," he said. "Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign. And there's an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can't give you much more."
So, Allen didn't reveal spoilers, but he did dish on the story revolving around Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, which should mark something different for the franchise. Also, the news that Woody and Buzz "realign" in the new film should entice fans.
Pete Docter, the chief creative officer of Pixar, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter in March about the film and gave some insight, too.
"If you go back and look at Bambi — I'm picking an extreme that's kind of intentionally slow because it is about nature and watching the changes in seasons and things — I think films have definitely sped up," Docter said. "Even Toy Story one to Toy Story 4, the level of visual sophistication, including the pacing, we're just trying to keep in touch with the rhythms of the world and it's definitely faster."
He added, referring to director and writer Stanton, "So, I will say Toy Story 5, I think Andrew's done a really great job of letting moments breathe in unexpected ways."
