FX has set the cast and timeline for the next installment of the Emmy-winning series Shōgun.
Season 2 of Shōgun will pick up a decade after the events of Season 1. Hiroyuki Sanada reprises his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, while Cosmo Jarvis reprises his role as John Blackthrone. Behind the scenes, Sanada’s role has expanded from producer to executive producer, while Jarvis joins the creative team as a co-executive producer. No other official casting has been announced as of yet.
Sanada will executive produce alongside co-creators and showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell and Michael De Luca.
The second season of Shōgun will begin production in Vancouver starting in January of 2026.
Shōgun Season 1 was inspired by James Clavell’s novel of the same name, which in turn drew loosely from real events in Japanese history.
“Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him,” the official logline for Season 1 reads. “When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.”
Premiering in February 2024 to widespread critical acclaim, Season 1 of Shōgun won a record 18 Emmy Awards in 2024, including for best drama series, Best Lead Actor in a Drama for Sanada, and Best Lead Actress in a Drama for Anna Sawai.
