One Day After Announcing Cuts, Alaska Airlines Reveals New Route Expansions

One day after it announced four major route cuts, Alaska Airlines has now revealed new route expansions.

Alaska Airlines will add flights from San Diego International Airport (SAN) to Chicago, Denver and Phoenix, with all flights operating three times daily year-round.

According to The Points Guy Alaska Airlines will enhance its West Coast network from San Diego by adding two more daily flights to four key cities: Las Vegas, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, and San Jose, California. All of these destinations—except Salt Lake City—will have six daily flights beginning October 26. In addition, service to Salt Lake City will operate three times a day.

The new routes are reportedly designed to enhance connectivity to San Diego, where Alaska stands as the second-largest carrier behind Southwest Airlines.

"We're proud to already serve San Diego and the surrounding region with the most nonstop destinations from San Diego," said Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Air Group, in a statement. "These exciting new additions to our network further expand our ability to take San Diegans directly to where they want to go, better than any other airline, with our premium onboard service and global loyalty program."

Alaska Airlines' new route expansions arrives just a day after the company revealed that four high-profile routes will come to an end later this year. It was previously reported that Alaska Airlines plans to discontinue several domestic and international routes, including Chicago to San Francisco, Los Angeles to Nassau in the Bahamas, and both Washington D.C. to Los Angeles and San Francisco. Travelers who booked flights in the discontinued routes will be offered full refunds or re-accomodation to nearby airports.
