It's always sad when a beloved retailer closes stores, especially when the local community relies on those stores for certain items. But, sometimes, there's a turnaround and those stores open again. Such is the case with a popular retail chain that recently closed all of its locations. Now, that chain is re-opening 132 stores in May alone.
That store is discount retail chain Big Lots. The company is entering the second phase of its comeback on May 1, and in doing so, Big Lots will reopen 54 stores on May 1, followed by another 78 stores starting May 15.
Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in September 2024, and the company announced it would close all of its its 800 stores in December 2024. But, towards the end of the year, Variety Wholesalers agreed to buy more than 200 Big Lots locations from the liquidation firm Gordon Brothers. Variety Wholesalers owns discount retail chains including Bargain Town, Roses and Super Dollar. At the time, Variety Wholesalers announced it would keep operating the Big Lots stores they acquired after relaunching them.
Variety launched the first wave of store re-openings in April, and now, they're on target for May. In June, Variety will complete the final phase of the re-openings, which will total 219 Big Lots locations open again.
"The customer response to the newly expanded assortment of fresh inventory and great deals has been overwhelmingly positive," Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, said in a statement.
"The Big Lots stores opening in May show our continued commitment to providing the best value to our customers with apparel for the family, everyday needs for the home, kitchen, and pantry plus a huge selection of famous brands," she added. "I couldn't be prouder of the dedicated team who made it possible for us to serve these communities again."
Customers can find a tally of locations, addresses and opening dates using the updated store locator tool on the Big Lots site.
