'Yellowstone' Spinoff Star Issues Strong Warning To Amazon About James Bond's Future

Fans of the Yellowstone prequel 1923 might think of Timothy Dalton as the cruel and sadistic Donald Whitfield, but for James Bond fans he will always be the deadpan, brooding 007 from the late 1980s. Starring in just two Bond flicks—The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989)—Dalton was deeply involved with the spy franchise during one of its other major periods of transition. After Licence to Kill, the Bond franchise faced legal troubles which meant there was a six-year gap between Dalton's last turn as Bond in 1989 and Pierce Brosnan's debut in 1995's GoldenEye. And now, with history (sort of) repeating itself, Dalton has shared his thoughts about the departure of the Broccoli family from the world 007.

"I was very, very surprised and shocked," Dalton told The Radio Times, echoing the general reaction from Bond fans and insiders alike. After six decades of one family running the James Bond movies, nobody, especially not extended members of that family, like Dalton, expected Barbara Broccoli to move on from Bond. "Barbara is, I think, a fabulous woman and a wonderful producer, as was her father, Cubby Broccoli, who I got on with very well and liked a lot," Dalton said.

Even though he only starred in two 007 flicks before passing the bowtie to Brosnan, Dalton still recalls his time as Bond fondly and says that he hopes that Amazon can retain the magic of the series without focusing solely on profits.

"It's a wonderful franchise," Dalton added, and recalled fondly that he first saw a classic Bond movie when he was "a kid." While wishing Amazon "good luck," he also noted, somewhat seriously, that quality matters more than anything. "They'll [Amazon] be doing their best to make a lot of money, so hopefully they will make good movies."

1923 Season 2 hits Paramount+ Plus on Sunday, February 23.
