Jimmy Kimmel Speaks Out Following Young Son’s Latest Heart Surgery

Jimmy Kimmel posted an emotional tribute to his seven-year-old son, Billy, after the child underwent his third heart surgery over the weekend.

Kimmel has previously opened up about his son’s heart condition, notably in an emotional 2017 monologue shortly after Billy was born. At just three days old, the infant had to undergo open-heart surgery to treat a rare congenital heart defect. It prompted Kimmel to advocate for wider health care coverage regardless of income during a Jimmy Kimmel Live! monologue.

On Memorial Day, the talk show host posted a photo of Billy sitting in his hospital bed, a wide smile across his face.

“This weekend, our boy Billy had his third (of three, we hope) open heart surgery,” Kimmel wrote. “We went into this experience with a lot of optimism and nearly as much fear and came out with a new valve inside a happy, healthy kid.”

Kimmel went on to praise his son’s doctors and the entire staff at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, once again calling for affordable healthcare for all. “Walking around this hospital, meeting parents at their most vulnerable, children in pain, and the miracle workers who do everything in their considerable power to save them is a humbling experience.

“We hope you never need CHLA, but if you do—know that they help families regardless of their ability to pay, thanks largely to the Affordable Care Act (another salute to the late Senator John McCain), generous donations from companies like Disney, which I am proud to work for, and especially from generous people like you.”

Kimmel concluded: “Thank you to my wife Molly for being stronger than is reasonable for any Mom to be and Billy, you are the toughest (and funniest) seven-year-old we know. There are so many parents and children who aren’t fortunate enough to go home after five days,” the comedian reflected. “Nothing matters more than taking care of each other.”

Many of Kimmel’s famous friends poured into the comments to support Billy’s recovery. “God bless your little Billy,” wrote John Stamos. “He’s lucky he has parents like you and also the care of the good folks at CHLA.”

“Sending love to your whole family and a thanks to everyone at CHLA for everything you do,” Ellen Degeneres weighed in.

“You're all are sweethearts!” wrote Jimmy Kimmel Live! director Bobcat Goldthwait.
