Top Gun: Maverick star Jon Hamm made it clear he’s open to joining the MCU. The Mad Men actor, who is currently starring in a villainous role in the fifth season of Hulu’s crime series Fargo, spoke to Screen Rant about his hopes of playing a specific bad guy in one of the company’s biggest titles.
Hamm has circled the MCU before, having at one point been floated to play X-Men villain Mister Sinister in The New Mutants. However, due to that film’s immensely troubled production, Hamm never filmed his role, and the character doesn’t appear in the final film. The actor was given a consolation prize, however, in the form of a cameo in a 2022 X-Men comic book, albeit playing himself.
Asked by Screen Rant whether he’d consider joining the Marvel universe in another role, Hamm expressed his willingness while admitting he’s in the dark about the studio’s decision-making. “I don't know. Those decisions get made at such a high level at this point, definitely above my pay grade,” the star reflected. “I would love to. I've been a fan of Marvel Comics and comics in general since I was probably single digits.”
Hamm proceeded to expound on the many Marvel properties that haven’t been adapted, but he seemed to have a particular affinity for The Fantastic Four. The actor name-checked Victor Von Doom, the villain most synonymous with the title, as a character he’d love to tackle.
“I think there are tons of stories that I'm familiar with, at least, that are still out there to be told,” Hamm explained. “There are certainly a lot of stories in the X-Men world to be told. Fantastic Four as well, [like] Doctor Doom. There are so many great things out there. But yeah, I hope I get a chance. Who knows?”
While Hamm is obviously well-credentialed to join the MCU, he seemed at peace with his career regardless. “Hopefully, whatever their plans are, they include me,” he said. “But if not, I know that they have a pretty deep bench of folks that are ready to be a part of those stories.”
Hamm’s willingness to become involved with the MCU comes as the studio faces its most challenging time to date. Its most recent release, The Marvels, debuted with the lowest opening for any of the studio’s films. Last summer, former Marvel heavyweight Robert Downey Jr. admitted that he was “happy” to be done playing Iron Man, although the studio is reportedly looking to bring heavy hitters like him back into the fold.
Hamm has managed to have a particularly evil last few years, even without a superheroic villain on his plate. In addition to his mustache-twirling turn on Fargo, he played terrorized Tom Cruise as Admiral Simpson in Top Gun: Maverick, and just finished up an antagonistic role on The Morning Show. He’ll soften things up a bit next January when he appears as Coach Carr in the musical remake of Mean Girls.
